Sometimes James Kirk thinks he's lost some of it. It probably started when people stopped joking around him about how he wasn't getting any younger.

As it is, Bones lectures him about it every time he goes for a routine physical: even with the best of technologies, he is long past the age when his body could regenerate its cells in full. Every encounter leaves him a little bit more worn out, a step closer to being unrepairable. The scars no longer fade but remain on his now-sallow skin, crisscrossing like a map of all the times he was touched by death.

It's made harder because his partner hasn't aged nearly as much, thanks to the damn Vulcan physiology. No hope in hell for them to take after those merry grandpas who drink margaritas together on Florida beaches. (He wouldn't want to retire, and Spock would probably object to wearing Hawaiian shirts. But more importantly, he would look his age and Spock would look like his boytoy, or something. And that would be wrong. Very hot, but wrong.)

Once in a while, a newcomer is surprised to hear that him and Spock have served together for almost all their careers. There tends to be a little pause, a subtle double take, then comes the realization. He's used to it by now, mostly.

Then there are times that Jim can't get used to. For example, when they are like this, naked flesh pressed against naked flesh. The Vulcan skin remains smooth and pliant under his touch, slightly damp from perspiration. Spock's head seems to be comfortably rested on his bare chest, and for a while he lets his fingers play around in the dark hair—less than immaculately shaped now, but as lustrous as it was on the day when they faced each other stark naked for the first time, unashamed and swept away by desire.

It was so long ago, yet every frame of it is etched onto his memory in a perfect replica. He remembers marveling at Spock's body; the shapes, the contours, and even the different shades of pale. Spock was built like a Greek god, if Greek gods could have Vulcan blood in them. And the pure hunger in those black eyes had told him everything he needed to know—that despite whatever rein over emotion that he supposedly had, Spock had wanted him every bit just as much.

He can't see Spock's eyes right now. It troubles him somehow.

But Spock's hand is caressing his chest, doing wicked little things: drawing lines, pressing into the sagging skin, doing what he refers to as finger kissing. He feels the firm warmth of Spock's palm on his rib cage and exhales sharply—there is a huge scar there from the Anatolia Incident, one that never quite healed.

Jim, what is on your mind?

"...what did I tell you about doing that?" he tries to sound offended but fails.

Forgive me, the voice transmitted is apologetic but calm. I merely sensed that you were less than content. Did my touch displease you?

"No, don't be ridiculous," he answers before he could lie about it, "it's the scars, that's all. I can be pretty vain when I want to, you know." (...and he really shouldn't shiver like this when Spock touches him. Why does he always let Spock get away with things like that?)

But your scars serve a purpose. Another kiss, this time on his heart. There is a faint scar there, too. A gift from the Klingon Ambassador. They remind me of all the triumphs and tribulations you endured to become the man you are now.

"And what kind of man do you see?" Jim Kirk asks, half curious and half playing coy.

Tilting up his head, Spock almost smiles as he chooses to express his thoughts out loud.

"Too proud to dye his hair. Thirty-seven scars, some of them on vital areas. Numerous wrinkles, mostly from laughing. Still impulsive and ill-tempered when provoked. Snores terribly at night and drools a little. Gained weight from last birthday, again for the third time."

"—I have NOT gained weight! My birthday was just a month ago!"

The indignant protest is silenced by a kiss as Spock leans over, soft lips all eager and tender.

Do not forget: Your scars are mine, t'hy'la, as are the lines that the years have left on your face.

A/N: I am quite aware that in TOS/the earlier movies, K&S aged at roughly the same pace. However, Spock Prime's appearance in XI at age 100+ raised to me the possibility that Vulcans age significantly slower than humans do. Hey, alt universe/timeline, gotta love it.

Aw, that was really adorable.

That last line was really lovely.
That was so lovely. I love how gentle it was.
My *heart*. I literally clutched my chest and sighed while reading this.
Oh so sweet! Love it.
Lovely and thoughtful, and what a wonderful theme to investigate. Made me smile. Thank you.
Aww, that was so sweet!
That was great! So soft and sweet. I love it!
That was so much more than I expected when I requested that, so I have to come out to say thank you. :D Absolutely lovely.
Oh, thank you for the lovely prompt! I'm glad you enjoyed the result! ^^
Oh my god, that was so beautiful!

Lovely work!
that was sweet XD
It would be quite logical for them to age in a different manner. I love the emotional turmoil of Kirk here, and the showing of their relationship <3
Awww! ♥♥♥♥♥
Just randomly hopped along links to this story. It's absolutely lovely, with such gorgeous detail to.
Aww I love how Spock sees Kirk. This is a cute story.
That was such fun :D

Cute. This made me laugh: he would look his age and Spock would look like his boytoy, or something. :)
Aww...that was lovely. Really enjoyed this!
Beautiful! Loved the last line. *g*
Yes, you did finish it! I love Spock asking Jim what is on his mind, and this line here:
"Too proud to dye his hair. Thirty-seven scars, some of them on vital areas. Numerous wrinkles, mostly from laughing. Still impulsive and ill-tempered when provoked. Snores terribly at night and drools a little. Gained weight from last birthday, again for the third time."
<3

Also, Jim is great in this one, spot-on.

(BTW, I have he *totally* snores at night. And Spock just lies there, because he needs less sleep, secretly loving it or something. XD)
....and Spock just lies there counting. Some people count sheep. Spock counts Jim Kirk's snores. :P

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face.

This fits "When You Are Old" perfectly, I love it.

Re: But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face.

Shhhh, that's the line for my NEXT fic! Don't give stuff away like that, damn you!! :P:P:P:P:P
That was so sweet! <3
*mush*

this was so sweetly amazing. loooove them.

Very hot, but wrong.)

hee hee. aww!
Lovely story. If you feel like writing more old nu-K/S (now, isn't that a weird construction), I, for one, will gladly read away.

You are correct, Vulcans DO age more slowly than humans: see TOS episodes "Journey to Babel" and "The Deadly Years". (TOS--imo, the only real canon. And it contradicts itself. Yay, lack of continuity.)

In "Journey to Babel" we meet Spock's parents for the first time. (More background appears in TAS "Yesteryear", which you can probably find on gnutella network easily enough, and of course they're in the movies, too.) Also has Andorians. If you could only watch ten TOS eps, this would be on the list.

In "The Deadly Years", Kirk and Spock are subjected to radiation that causes them to age rapidly. Kirk begins to experience early stages of senile dementia (or something--mad cow, I guess) and must be removed from command. He gets really pissed at Spock for not backing him and angrily sends him away in a painful scene. His now-married ex-girlfriend Janice Wallace happens to be on board and offers to, um, help him feel a little more studly again, but he tells her it'll be a cold day on Vulcan before he goes in for a pity fuck ... or he's not Captain James T. Kirk! Oh, and then there's that scene near the end where the camera focuses in on Kirk's crotch straining against his pants the sickbay restraints.

Now, if you want to see something really slashy, watch the first season episodes. Srsly. I rewatched "The Enemy Within" today and it was hella hilarious. Especially the part at 5 min 20 sec where the Evil Kirk checks out the male transporter technician and smirks. Or the scene near the end where Kirk is restored and Spock looks like he's just met God. It's a very different Spock, all needy and at war with himself and just a tad codependent. *sigh* I love TOS.
Oh wow. *laughs*

There actually is a companion story to this piece, but it involves Kirk seeing Spock Prime (again), and the aging issue is not really at the center of it. My usual forte with fanfiction is either the future tense or the past tense, however, so old!nu!K/S is something that I very well might write again.

TOS wise, I've been watching the episodes provided by CBS on youtube. I particularly enjoyed Apple and Devil in the Dark so far. It really showed me a different set of K, S, and K/S possibilities...but I mostly chalk it up to maturation and comfort level. But man, the Spock in TOS is....just all kinds of awesome as a character, seriously.
Been searching for kirk/spock (and occasionally uhura) so I'm not quite sure how I got here... wait... st_xi_kink?

At any rate, love the story!!!!! It's tender and lovely and just... mmm.

Also (crap new computer can't type characters yet) but I went to say you are Chinese? My username is a direct translation of my Chinese name! XD
Hello, I'm glad you liked the story. ^^ I have another one written. You can find it under the tag /english fanfiction

Yes, I was born in China and I read/write Chinese at a proficient level. This LJ started out as an exercise in writing Chinese, as a matter of fact. :)
