百老汇简短repo:2011/6/25 《The Lion King》

剧目:The Lion King
时间:2011/6/25
地点:Minskoff Theatre, Broadway, NYC

主要出演:
Simba: Clifton Oliver
Mufasa: Alton Fitzgerald White
Rafiki: Tshidi Manye
Scar: Gareth Saxe
Nala: Chaunteé Schuler
Young Simba: Aubrey Omari Joseph
Young Nala: Khail Toi Bryant
Zazu: Jeff Binder
Pumbaa: Tom Alan Robbins
Timon: Fred Berman
  1. Aside from Rafiki (full-voiced and magnificent) and Nala (a surprisingly grave alto), I was somewhat disappointed with the vocals which, I felt, lacked power and volume as was demanded by the epic score.

  2. I didn't remember the song "Shadowland" from the original film, but it was absolutely heart-wrenching. The staging painted a poignant picture of Nala as a character.

  3. "The Circle and Life" and "He Lives in You"--there is really nothing left to be said about these two songs, which still provokes the same sense of wonder and awe from me as they once did seventeen years ago. Tears came to my eyes at the second rendition of "He Lives in You." Beautiful, beautiful staging.

  4. Zazu was AMAZING with his fourth-wall breaking quips ("What?! You are firing me?! IN THIS ECONOMY?!"). Timon and Pumbaa also provided well-timed comic relief. Big thumbs up to all of them.

  5. Scar was well-done, but different from what I imagined. He had the wickedness but not the hardness, possibly because of the singing voice issue (see point No.1). Case in point: "Be Prepared" felt sinister but didn't really convey the sense of overwhelming rise of evil that I got from watching the film. Similarly, though Mufasa was loving and stern, I just didn't get that kingly gravitas vibe from him.

  6. Young Simba was very well-acted, spunky and cute. If only he could sing better! (Not that he did a bad job, per se, but just...again, I thought the music deserved more.)

  7. The stage design was truly amazing, even if sometimes I wished it was on a bigger scale (mainly with "The Circle of Life"). Nevertheless, I was constantly impressed by its creativity and whimsy. The shadowplay was especially appreciated.

  8. The pacing was a bit rushed. Leon, who watched the show with me, voiced this opinion as well. It's understandable, though, since the plot is so very famous, and even at this pace the musical clocked at about 2.5 hours (totally did not feel like it...).

  9. I really want to complain about certain section of the Minskoff Theatre's orchestra seating. Namely, the left- and right- wings of the back section. Could not get a full view of the stage background no matter what. (Leon and I ended up taking empty seats behind us to get a better angle, but those didn't have appropriate elevation so...ugh.)

  10. Last but not least: When I heard the "faith and love" bit of "The Circle of Life", I totally thought...Godric and Eric a la True Blood. /facepalm
